The Nissan Note e-POWER drives differently from a Toyota hybrid, and its battery fails differently too. When the small lithium-ion pack weakens, the petrol engine starts running almost all the time and the car loses its quick, electric pick-up. Most hybrids in Pakistan, such as the Toyota Aqua, can drive the wheels with the engine, the motor or both. Nissan's e-POWER is different. It is a series hybrid: the electric motor always drives the wheels, and the 1.2-litre petrol engine never drives them at all. The engine's only job is to run a generator that charges the battery and feeds the motor.
Between the engine and the motor sits a small lithium-ion battery of roughly 1.5 kWh. It stores energy from the generator and from braking, then releases it in quick bursts when you pull away. That burst is why a healthy Note e-POWER feels so lively from a standstill.
Because the pack is small, it is charged and drained constantly. When its cells lose capacity or drift out of balance, the engine starts more often and runs longer. Nissan uses related e-POWER systems in some of its other models, such as the Serena e-POWER, and the same basic principles apply.

In a healthy Note e-POWER the engine switches on and off as the battery needs charge. With a weak pack it starts soon after you pull away and keeps running, even at signals and in slow traffic.
The e-POWER's quick start comes from the battery. When the pack cannot deliver its power, acceleration feels flat, especially with the AC on and a full car.
The engine works harder and longer to keep the small pack topped up, so fuel use rises, often before any warning light appears.
The battery level on the display drops quickly when you accelerate and fills up again just as fast. A pack with weak cells has less usable capacity, so the reading moves sharply.
A system warning or reduced-power mode means the car's computer has found a problem. It may be the battery, its cooling or a sensor, so a proper scan should come before any replacement.

The Note e-POWER is at its best in city driving, which is exactly where its battery works hardest. In stop-and-go traffic on Shahrah-e-Faisal, University Road or around Saddar, the pack is drained on every pull-away and refilled on every brake. Each of those is a small charge cycle, and a small pack goes through many more of them per kilometre than a large one.
Heat is the second factor. Lithium-ion cells age faster when they are hot, and a car parked in the sun in May or June gets very hot inside. Running the AC hard in slow traffic adds to the load the system has to carry. A pack that would last a long time in a mild climate has a tougher life here.
Most Note e-POWERs in Pakistan are Japanese imports, so the pack has already done several years of work before the car arrives. Add a few Karachi summers, and it is common for older imports to start showing the symptoms above.

There is no fixed figure, because battery life depends on heat, traffic and how the car was used before import. The small pack is charged and drained constantly, so in Pakistan's heat and stop-and-go traffic it tends to wear faster than it would in a mild climate. The clearest sign of an ageing pack is the engine running more and more of the time. A new pack from us carries a 5-year written warranty.

If the pack has lost capacity it empties quickly, and the engine has to keep running to supply the electric motor. Heavy AC use in summer or a fault the computer is protecting against can also keep the engine on. A diagnostic scan tells us which it is.

For a short time, usually yes, but the car will use more fuel and pull away slowly. Because the electric motor always drives the wheels, a pack that fails completely can put the car into reduced-power mode or stop it from moving. If a warning light is on, get it scanned soon rather than waiting.
